If you’ve never been to or even heard of Polytopia before, you’re in for a treat! Polytopia is a showcase weekend event of breakout classes and workshops, luncheons, and evening parties that people who enjoy the more connection based relationships in ethical non-monogamy will love. It is going on this month, March 29-31 at the Crowne Plaza Convention Center in downtown Portland.
You don’t have to be poly to get some real benefit from attending the Polytopia classes though; they offer classes and workshops for people from all walks of ethical non-monogamy and sex positivity. There are workshops that will help guide you through ethical non-monogamy and dealing with jealousy. There are also some fun classes that explore erotic creativity, how to please your partner, and even some sex toy demonstration classes.
Polytopia classes and workshops are taught by well-known instructors, both local and from afar, such as Angie Gunn, who in addition to being a certified sex therapist and a licensed social worker, also serves as chairperson for SPEEC. Also presenting this year is Becky Fromm, who owns a local professional cuddling and companionship company called Positivitouch. Cassie Brighter who is a trans-activist and a Sex-Positive World board member, will be presenting a workshop on Poly Communication. Gloria Jackson Nefertiti will be giving a workshop on transcending shame. Relationship Anarchy Meetup Group organizer, Phoenyx is a long-standing member of Sex Positive Portland and will be presenting a workshop on relationship anarchy that will provide the guests with tools for relating more consciously and authentically. Tanya Jarvik, who has been navigating the complexities of ethical non-monogamy and has developed an extensive practice in the areas of communications, narrative therapy, conflict transformation, and non-violent communication. She will be teaching two workshops on jealousy, one for those who struggle with jealousy, and another for those who rarely get jealous, but want to be helpful to those partners who struggle with jealousy.
There are also many former workshop instructors who will be coming back by popular demand… People like Adrian Martin, Cliff Rees, Eleanor O’Brien, Gabriella Cordova, Gwenn Cody, John Sickler, Ray Cohen, Saffire Bouchelion, and Stella Harris, who are all well known local personalities, who make regular appearances and have instructed at Polytopia before.
Polytopia is hosted by Sex Positive World and features an opening night gala that will feature a social hour, live music with Adrian Martin, a theater performance with Eleanor O’Brien, and a motivational speech from Poly Vlogger, Evita Sawyers. Some of the workshop presenters will talk a bit about their workshops, and the evening will end with dancing to the rhythmic beats of Saffire Bouchelion. The opening Gala is a great opportunity to get a taste of what Polytopia and Sex Positive Portland is all about. It’s a great night to meet and get to know people who share similar interests.
Saturday morning kicks off the workshop festivities, with classes running from 10am until 5pm with a one hour break for lunch. During the lunch break, you have the option of attending a couple of different luncheon discussion groups.
Then, on Saturday Night… Polytopia: The Party!, happens from 9pm until 1am, at the Sex Positive Portland’s Center. It’s included in the weekend pass, but is also available to the public for $25 at the door. Organizers like to describe The Party as your opportunity to try out a few of the skills you’ve learned and for greater opportunity to meet with other like-minded people. There will be a DJ,, live music, dancing and mixer games, and in their Intimate Space there will be Polyamorous Storytelling. There are also various intimate playrooms for people who have the appropriate permissions, through the SPP leveling system, or who are guests of one of the SPP members with appropriate levels. While the party is considered BYOB, the party is intended to be a fun, social party with sober consensual fun.
Sunday ushers in another full day of workshops and classes from 10am until 5pm with one-hour luncheon, discussion groups at noon. Then at 5pm, all guests are invited to the closing gathering (location TBA), for some more social time, with an opportunity to make those connections with new friends, and to say goodbye to Polytopia for another year.
